Honolulu Airport Introduces Electric Trams for Passenger Transportation
Honolulu Inouye International Airport has launched a new shuttle system using electric trams to transport passengers between terminals and gates.
Honolulu Inouye International Airport has announced the introduction of electric trams to enhance transportation for domestic passengers. This initiative is part of efforts to modernize and improve passenger services, aligning with global trends towards sustainable airport operations.
The new trams, equipped to carry up to 40 passengers each, will operate on existing routes used by conventional gasoline-powered buses. Their primary function will be to transport passengers between the main terminals and gates C and G, in a bid to facilitate smoother transitions for travelers. Passengers can board these open-air vehicles with carry-on luggage, providing a convenient travel option.
These vehicles were acquired through Hawaii's Electric Vehicle as a Service program, and each unit costs $255,000. Key features include advanced monitoring technologies such as cameras and GPS systems, which are intended to improve fleet management and ensure passenger safety.
The electric trams represent a step forward in the airport's sustainability goals, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly transportation solutions within the airport premises, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
